Cassandra Wilson: this daring, velvet-voiced perfomer has been breaking down barriers since her all embracing Blue Light ’til Dawn, an album that redefined jazz singing thanks to Wilson’s emotionally rich interpretations of blues, folk, and country songs, as well as standards and originals. Cassandra Wilson performed one of the leading roles in Wynton Marsalis’ “Blood on the Fields,” the first jazz work to receive a Pulitzer Prize. Her 1992 landmark album Blue Light ‘Til Dawn paved the way for a new generation of jazz singers through repertoire that challenged American Songbook standards.
